Korean Age System
Traditionally in South Korea, a baby was considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone's age increased by one year on New Year's Day (January 1), not on their individual birthday. This meant a baby born on December 31 would be considered 2 years old the very next day. In June 2023, South Korea officially adopted the international age-counting system for legal and administrative purposes, ending decades of confusion. However, the traditional system still lingers in casual conversation and cultural contexts.
Chinese Traditional Age Counting
In Chinese traditional age counting (known as "xu sui" or "nominal age"), a person is 1 year old at birth, and their age increases by one at each Lunar New Year rather than on their birthday.
