How to Calculate Age Precisely: Leap Years, Month Ends, and Other Edge Cases

Age looks like a simple subtraction until the day of the month is earlier than the birthday. A clear convention for borrowing days and handling leap years makes the result reproducible.

Age in completed years

For most forms, age is the number of full birthdays reached. Start with the current year minus the birth year. Subtract one if the birthday has not occurred yet in the current year. Someone born on October 20, 2000 is 25 on October 19, 2026 and turns 26 on October 20, 2026.

Years, months, and days

To express an elapsed age precisely, subtract the birth date from the end date by calendar fields. If the end-day number is smaller, borrow days from the preceding month. If the end-month number is smaller, borrow one year and add 12 months. The borrowed month must use its actual length—28 or 29 days in February, 30 or 31 elsewhere.

For example, from January 31 to March 2, you cannot treat every month as 30 days. A calculator should use real calendar dates so it handles February and different month lengths consistently.

Leap-day birthdays and time zones

A person born on February 29 has a birthday date only in leap years. Legal and administrative systems may treat February 28 or March 1 as the birthday in a non-leap year, so use the convention stated by the institution asking for the age. Time zone can also matter for a newborn or a deadline close to midnight: use the location and local civil date that the record uses.

Date of birth is sensitive personal data

Use a calculator you trust and avoid entering your date of birth into a site that does not need it. Calcify’s calculator processes its inputs in the browser, but an official age determination should still follow the requesting organization’s rules.

Key takeaways

  • Completed age is based on birthdays already reached, not a rounded division of days by 365.
  • Exact years, months, and days require real month lengths and leap-year handling.
  • For legal or benefits purposes, the governing agency’s age rule controls the answer.

Run your own numbers
